I was still digesting the revelation that Angie Dunkin and the sheriff were an item when I walked into his office. Brody was in his sixties and Angie in her fifties. I couldn’t even begin to fathom the relationship between the two, but sometimes opposites attracted. The fact that I’d given Angie several opportunities to mention her son and she didn’t was disconcerting. As much as I tried to wrap my mind around her reasons for keeping mum on the subject, nothing made any sense. I also couldn’t figure how any of it could be tied to Harley’s disappearance.

“That was quite the fiasco at the Yoder’s farm,” Brody said with a loud grunt when I came through the doorway.

I took the seat across from him and quickly studied his large frame and round face. He was a decent looking man, even with his hulking size. He’d struck me as a gentle giant and also a sleeping bear that you didn’t want to rile. I could have sworn he’d mentioned a wife the last time I was here, but I might be mistaken about it. His ring finger was bare.

“It was worth a shot. You must have suspected the parents,” I said.

“Like I said before, they’re strange people, but I can’t say that I thought they’d murdered their child.” He leaned back and crossed his hands on his gut.

“You still believe Charity ran away?”

“Honestly, I don’t know. We’ve searched the property thoroughly. If Marlan or Edith did something to her, they hid the body elsewhere.”

“I still don’t understand how the girl vanished into thin air, just like Harley. Doesn’t that keep you up at night?” Nervous energy made me rub my fingertips.

“Sure, it does, but I’ve learned from years of experience in this business, worrying doesn’t usually help. It can paralyze you. We follow tried and true protocols and hope for the best. Some things are in God’s hands.”

Now he sounded like the bishop back in Blood Rock. I tried not to leave anything to religious, spiritual, or supernatural intervention. Sometimes it was hard.

“I can’t do that, Sheriff.” I mimicked him, crossing my arms over my chest.

“I know you can’t.” He snorted and shook his head. “You also can’t stay here forever. I’m sure the people of Blood Rock need you back there.”

“Are you trying to get rid of me?” I lifted an eyebrow in a joking way, but my voice was serious.

“We’re doing everything we can in the Warner case. Like you already know, the Amish usually police themselves. Unless what they’re doing affects outsiders, I won’t get involved.”

“Even for a missing girl?” I scowled at him.

“I’m willing to bet that one of her relatives turned English spirited her away to a better life. Happens all the time,” he said in a smug way.

“I hope you’re right,” I muttered, sharpening my gaze on him. The best way to deal with the Angie Dunkin situation was to be blunt as hell. “Angie Dunkin wanted me to tell you hello.”

I swear he blushed a little when I mentioned her name.
